5. Classes of licences

(1)Subject to the provisions of this Act, the Authority may, on such conditions as it may determine, issue a sound or television broadcasting service licence for a specified area in the following broadcasting service categories:
(a)a public broadcasting service;
(b)a commercial broadcasting service; and
(c)a community broadcasting service.

 

(2)Subject to this Act, broadcasting licences are categorised as—
(a)free-to-air broadcasting service;
(b)terrestrial subscription broadcasting service;
(c)satellite subscription broadcasting service;
(d)cable subscription broadcasting service;
(e)low power sound broadcasting service; and
(f)any other class of licence prescribed by the Authority from time to time.

(3)Applications for broadcasting licences must be made in terms of the applicable provisions of the Electronic Communications Act and any regulations prescribed thereunder.
