The Minister of Health has, under section 61(1)(a) of the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974), and in consultation with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, made the regulations in the Schedule.

 

Definitions

 

1.In these regulations any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned in the Act, shall bear such meaning, and unless the context otherwise indicates—

 

"approved educational institution"

means an education and training institution which has been granted recognition and approval by the board for the teaching and training of students in oral health following an evaluation process as determined by the board;

 

"board"

means the Professional Board for Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene established in terms of section 15 of the Act;

 

"section"

means a section of the Act;

 

"student"

means a person registered as such under the Act;

 

"the Act"

means the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974)

 

Registration as a student dental assistant

 

2.In the case of a person who have worked as dental assistants prior to the date of publication of this amendment for a period of less than five (5) years, within four months from the date of publication of this amendment: Provided that the registrar shall not after four months from the date of publication of this amendment, register any person referred to in this subregulation.

Requirements for registration

 

3.        An application by a student for registration as a student dental assistant shall be accompanied by—

(a) a certified copy of such student’s identity or birth certificate or, if the student is unable to furnish either of these documents, such other proof of his or her age and correct names as may be acceptable to the registrar;
(b)a certificate to prove that such student has commenced study in a subject or subjects at an approved educational institution or in the case of an application by a person who has worked as a dental assistant for a period of less than five years, a certificate issued by the employer of such person to prove that such person has worked for the said period; and
(c)the prescribed registration fee.

 

4.A person registered as a student dental assistant in terms of regulation 7(2) must enrol for a formal qualification for registration as a dental assistant with an approved educational institution within a period of one year from the date of registration as a student dental assistant, failing which, the registration as a student dental assistant shall lapse.
