33. Syllabus for the Examination for a Licence as a Compass Adjuster (Restricted)

Oral examination with reference to the standard examination compass binnacle and equipment. in the following aspects of adjusting:

(a) Types of compasses on the vessels concerned;
(b) specification of card and liquid;
(c) testing for mechanical deficiencies and topping up;
(d) accessories and equipment- test for faults and alignment;
(e) correctors-test for permanent magnetism;
(f) function of correctors;
(g) siting of correctors;
(h) sequence of placing correctors;
(i) methods of determining deviations, with particular reference to types of vessels concerned;
(j) dealing with interfering fields caused other than by hard iron and soft iron effects;
(k) safety of navigation requirements relating to compasses and compass equipment;
(I) modus operandi of adjustment;
(m) residual deviations-factors to be taken into account when determining whether further adjustment should be contemplated.
