Regulations

A candidate for the certificate of competency as chief mate shall have—

(a)	completed at least 12 months' approved sea service as an officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 3 000GT or more on unlimited voyages while holding, as a minimum, a certificate of competency as deck officer;

(b)	passed a theoretical examination at an accredited institution and have successfully completed training; and

(c)	been assessed at level 3.
