Merchant Shipping (Seafarer Recruitment and Placement) Regulations, 2017

1. Definitions

In these Regulations unless the context indicates otherwise, any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned in the Act has the meaning so assigned and—

 

"Convention"

means the Maritime Labour Convention as defined in section 2 of the Act;

 

"seafarer recruitment and placement service"

means any person, company, institution, agency or other organisation, in the public or the private sector, which is engaged in recruiting seafarers on behalf of shipowners or placing seafarers with shipowners;

 

"shipowner"

means the owner of a ship or any person or any authorised representative, such as a manager or bareboat  charterer, who has assumed responsibility for the operation of a ship;

 

"the Act"

means the Merchant Shipping Act, 1951 (Act No. 57 of 1951).
