To provide for measures to promote meat safety and the safety of animal products; to establish and maintain essential national standards in respect of abattoirs; to regulate the importation and exportation of meat; to establish meat safety schemes; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

an Amendment to these Regulations has been added as published in Government Gazette No. 27464 dated 15 April 2005;
Poultry Regulations, 2006 have been added to the Meat Safety Act, 2000, as published in Government Gazette No. 28520 dated 24 February 2006;
Ostrich Regulations, 2007 have been added to the Meat Safety Act, 2000, as published in Government Gazette No. 29559 dated 2 February 2007; and
an Amendment to the Red Meat Regulations has been added as published in Government Gazette No. 31021 dated 9 May 2008.
