2. Definitions

2.1Act: means the Use of Official Languages Act of 2012.

 

2.2Constitution: means the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996.

 

2.3Department: means the National Department of Arts and Culture.

 

2.4Functional Differentiation: The principle that not all eleven official languages need to be used for all contextual purposes, but that different languages may be more appropriate for certain functions.

 

2.5Language Practitioner: means an employee of the RAF who is responsible for the management of usage of official languages.

 

2.6Language Unit: means a language unit established in terms of section 7 of the Act

 

2.7Limited English Proficient Individuals: means individuals who do not speak English as their primary language and who have a limited ability to read, write, speak, or understand English.

 

2.8Minister: means the Minister responsible for language matters, i.e. Arts and Culture.

 

2.9Mutually Intelligibility: means shared or commonly understood languages in the two main language groups in South Africa.
